Beauty Tip: New Year’s Eve go-to lip color

Now that the holidays are over, the next big event is New Year’s Eve! Even if you don’t have big plans, it’s a great time to take inventory on things you want to change, improve or do differently in life. While some of you may laugh at this, there’s actually a very easy way to give yourself a little emotional or confidence boost, and that’s by changing up your lipstick or lipgloss color. There’s a phenomenon known as the “lipstick effect”, and it’s basically when times get tough, lipstick sales go up. Google it – it’s fascinating to read about how many different times in the ups and downs of this country there’s been peaks of lipstick sales! So, as you do some soul searching on things you want to do in 2017, have a little fun and change up your look with a fresh color to make a new start. Some of the smallest changes can have a large effect, and boost one’s outlook.

One of my favorites, especially for this time of the year, is switching to a rich berry lip color shade. It complements just about every skin tone out there, and is much easier to wear than red. Plus, it makes you look really polished yet natural, and a bit sassy, even if you aren’t wearing much makeup at all. Berry lip color can take you from day to night easily! Here’s some of my go-to brands and picks for that perfect berry shade:

Clockwise, from top:

  1. LORAC’s Alter Ego Lip Gloss in Dominatrix – simply put, this is just a really kickass formula and color! The lipgloss has just the right amount of pigment to cover like a lipstick, but keeps lips hydrated and shines for hours. While I know the intense color in the tube may look a little scary, it’s beautiful on even the lightest skin tones. This trends on the cooler shade range, but is really wearable on most.
  2. butterLONDON’s Plush Rush Lipstick in FAB – this is a beautiful combo of deep rose and berry, and has a more matte finish, but keeps lips moisturized and is long-wearing. butterLONDON’s lipstick is probably one of my favorite little splurges and has a hint of mint in the formula. This shade trends more to the warmer side, but again, looks fantastic on most skin tones. This is definitely a more sophisticated shade, but looks great dressed up or down.
  3. PUR Cosmetics’s Lip Gloss Stick in Rum Raisin – The sheerest of the 3 formulas featured, this lip gloss is in a super-handy crayon style for quick and easy application. PUR’s gloss is never sticky, and gives a beautiful wash of a neutral berry color, and gives a soft, moisturizing glossy sheen on the lips – with zero glitter! LOVE to wear this shade daily in winter, but it’s just a great for a night out or date night!

Not pictured, but also highly recommended, are Clinique’s Almost Lipstick in Black Honey (one of the first-ever lipstick+gloss hybrids!) and Lipstick Queen’s Hello Sailor. Both of these formulas offer a neutral berry shade, with a glossy sheen that hydrates lips.

As I’m writing this blog, listening to “Ladies & Gentlemen, the best of George Michael”, I agree that 2016 has been one of the most challenging years that I can remember, along with many heartbreaking and shocking moments. But I’m looking forward to starting anew next year. For those who read this, I’m hoping that you had a wonderful holiday season, and enjoy making some small changes that lead to bigger, positive impact. Cheers to the New Year!

Product Review: butter LONDON Sheer Wisdom Nail Tinted Moisturizer

Butter LONDON is one of my favorite nail/makeup brands for a lot of reasons. Mainly because they are committed to omitting controversial and harmful ingredients, of which plague the nail industry. But also because they are innovative and have the manicure equivalent of the no-makeup makeup look. Per my previous post, I try to pick the easiest possible polishes and tools to give myself manicures, simply because I’m so busy and usually hard on my nails. Bravo for butter LONDON thinking of this really cool new polish/treatment:

butter london, nail polish, sheer wisdom
best new treatment polish!

This new line of 6 shades is a neutral nail treatment and polish in one, that actually helps moisturize, strengthen, and repair nails. All while giving a beautiful buff, natural color to the nails. Similar to the Julep Oxygen Nail Treatment, this can be used as a quick polish and dries fast. The shade above is “Neutral”.

The formula counteracts brittle nails, and prevents future breakage. The 6 shades are designed to complement any skin tone. The other plus? It doesn’t smell strongly after it dries – I used my prep tools and drying drops (see my Quick & Easy Manicure post) and I was done in 10 minutes! My skin wasn’t irritated by excess chemicals either – my fingertips felt comfortable and weren’t red or stinging. My nails are prone to breakage, and I usually keep them shorter, since they won’t grow long. I can’t wait to see how they look with continued use of Sheer Wisdom! Give it a try – even as a great in-between manicure choice if you usually go for brighter colors.

Beauty Topic: Quick & Easy Summer manicure

I love getting pedicures. But to be honest, I hate getting manicures because I always end up messing up my nails within a day or two after if I get a bright color. Plus, my nails get easily irritated by chemicals and acetone. So, rather than waste money on a weekly manicure, I took it upon myself to find a few essentials that perform and give me an easy mani at home.

There are two brands that I applaud for taking a serious stance on their nail product ingredients: butter LONDON and Julep. I purposely went direct to them, as they are making a concerted effort to help ensure their products promote healthy nails. This is a very controversial topic, and if you want more info, there are tons of articles on Google available from various bloggers and watch-dog sites. But for now, I will focus on these brands, as I’ve had great luck with their products.

I wear my nails short, and I love this combination of products as they give me a sheer, natural-looking, and easily maintained finish.

butter london, essie, julep
essentials for an easy mani

1) Prep nails & cuticles with essie Apricot Cuticle oil: this oil is fantastic for quick absorption and hydration. This is one of the few essie products I have, and it’s always been great. It has a nail polish brush, so you simply swipe across the cuticles and then massage in.

2) Julep Cuticle Wand: this is super easy to use in pushing back cuticles without tearing skin. I love that it’s soft-edged, and easy to grip.

3) Julep Oxygen Nail Treatment: this is a fantastic alternative to nail polish. It allows your nails to breathe, while strengthening them. It delivers a delicate, sheer pink, glossy finish – looks beautiful against many skin tones. It also can be layered – I usually apply another coat about two days later, after my initial application. Another GREAT nail polish alternative is the new butter LONDON Nail Tinted Moisturizers. More on those later!

4) butter LONDON P.D. Quick Dry Conditioning Drops: this is magic in a bottle!! You could actually use this over any manicure process, but it immediately makes polish dry and keeps cuticles conditioned. Best stuff ever!

I can be done with this process in about 10 minutes flat – including time to initially trim and file my nails. Also, I don’t use water in the manicure process – it’s been proven to cause nails to become brittle. Also, my hands haven’t become raw or irritated since I’m avoiding harsh chemicals. Due to sailing, gardening, and other summer fun, my nails take a beating. But these easy essentials give me great, consistent results fast!
