This product review is actually about 20 years in the making (both in personal and professional spa use), and something that is so routine to me now that I had to remind myself about it’s importance. It made me realize that I basically take this product for granted, daily. That’s bad, because it is something that should be shared with everyone I know. So, here it is!

Witch Hazel is one of the best products that any skin type can utilize within a skincare routine, as a toner between cleansing and moisturizing. Witch Hazel is also known in other products as the ingredient “Hamamelis”, which is the genus name of its plant’s family. It is a naturally flowering shrub, and from the North American version’s bark, we get the liquid extract we know as “witch hazel”. (Essentially, the colonists named the shrub by using a combination of  synonyms for a familiar plant they had back in England). It has a long history of use, and has been used for centuries by the Native Americans in various medicinal purposes. But of course, the colonists renamed it for them. Jerks.

But, back on topic. So, why is this such a great product? Well, for one, it is naturally a strong anti-oxidant, which helps reverse the aging of skin cells. It is also a natural astringent, which helps shrink pores and control oil. But it also is incredibly soothing, which will calm itching for skin suffering from dryness, psoriasis, and eczema. Use it on a cotton pad or square twice a day, and it will remove any remaining traces of makeup, cleanser, dead skin, oil, and help fight acne. It is also a natural remedy for bug bites, soothing wounds, and makes a great aftershave for guys. Plus, did I mention that it is incredibly inexpensive? Just go to the first-aid aisle of your nearest grocery or drug store, and it’s usually sitting next to hydrogen peroxide or isopropyl alcohol. I recommend getting the plain, straight up, no frills, generic brand version – mine is usually the Up & Up brand from Target.

For less than $4, your skin will be brighter, clearer, and soothed. Extra benefit? Your moisturizer will work even better.
